WHAT'S THE BEST SECURITY CAMERA SYSTEM FOR YOUR HOME?

There are many security cameras and everyone has their favorite. These days there are many choices and all are decent.

You need to first look at your current setup and where you want to put them. For security cameras to be effective they need a clear field of view, or you need multiple cameras to cover all blind spots.

The next consideration is power. Solar really only works if they are placed in an open area with no trees or nothing overhead.

The final consideration is mounting. You want them at least waist height or higher in order to get the best coverage.

Doorbell cameras are great for porch pirates. Not so great to protect your vehicle as they can probably only see 1 side.

Consider an optimal setup of 1 doorbell camera for each entrance to your home, and 1 or more remote cameras for blind spots not covered by the doorbell cameras to cover your vehicle and/or shed

Finally, you should also keep the camera makes from the same manufacturer. Another words, get all ring cameras or all nest cameras so that you don't have to learn multiple applications.

Bonus tip. Add a yard sign

Here's a Web page to help you decide on best models - as tested and not just personal Opinions.

VETS - DON'T LET YOUR PENSION GET STOLEN

Do not let someone redirect your pension payments.  Pension theft can occur when someone convinces you to shift your payouts to a new bank account or a separate financial product such as (annuities or trusts)

Warning Signs

  • A financial adviser tells you that you’re entitled to additional benefits simply because you’re a veteran.
  • An adviser guarantees that they will get you an enhanced VA pension.
  • Don’t trust an organization or individual that contacts you out of the blue and offers to assist you with a VA claim.
  • Don’t hesitate to say “no” if an adviser pressures you to act fast.
  • Don’t be swayed by a name. Words like “veterans” or “military families” in an organization’s name doesn’t necessarily mean it’s legitimate, the FTC says.
  • Don’t settle for vague or evasive answers. If a financial professional won’t definitively answer your questions, walk away.

MAKING THE CHANGE TO INTERNET TV

Everyone hates their cable company.  The cost for simply watching your favorite channels is simply crazy.  Here's why.  Cable companies know what people watch the most.  They bundle the most watched channels into several different tiers so that you have to purchase the highest package in order to get your favorite programs.

You would think that making the change to a streaming TV service would offer a better and cheaper option.  Here are some bullet points to be aware of when choosing a streaming service

  • You will still need an internet connection.  Either Spectrum or Frontier for this area or cellular for your tablet.
  • No one offers an a-la-carte option for picking only the channels you want to watch.
  • There are MANY choices for streaming companies and all of them make it difficult to decide what package to chose.
  • You can't simply stream the few channels that you want to watch.  Current equipment doesn't allow you to turn off the channels you don't want.

None of this is totally the fault of the TV company.  It is the fault of the big media companies like Disney. Each media company owns several channels.  They force by contract their content on the TV providers.  Even if the user doesn't want a particular channel, if you buy a package you are given all the other content offered.

HOW TO AVOID FAKE BANK SCHEMES

You get a text from your bank saying some fraud has happened.  Or they may even call or send you an email.

DON'T FALL FOR THIS.

Anyone can call or text you.

Here's how to react if you get a call or text.

Call:  Tell the caller you will call the bank back.  Do not call a phone number they give you.  Look up your banks 800 customer service number and call that directly

Text:  Call your bank directly.  Do not click any links or call any phone number listed on the text.

email:  Call your bank directly.  Do not click any links or call any phone number listed on the email.

BOTTOM LINE:  Do not give out personal information to anyone who contacts you directly.  Do not verify credit card numbers or social security numbers to anyone who may call you no matter how convincing they may sound.

FACEBOOK SCAM ALERT

Yet another Facebook-related scam is making the rounds, but this one isn’t being perpetrated on the Facebook website.

It’s actually taking place on Messenger app instead.

As Facebook scams go, this one is pretty simple but it’s also unusually widespread.

In a nutshell, the scam goes something like this…

Several of your friends start receiving strange messages that appear to have been sent by you via Facebook Messenger. These messages can vary quite a bit but they are almost always messages that are out of character for you.

Some messages will try to trick your friends into signing up for some “deal”. Others will try to get them to click a link or watch a video.

Regardless of the actual messages they receive, they are almost always the types of messages you wouldn’t normally send. That should be a huge red flag for your friends, and luckily it usually will be.

Most people who receive these messages recognize right away that they’re out of character for the sender and message them to let them know what’s going on.

That’s why in most cases the messages themselves aren’t really the problem. The real problem is the “sender” usually thinks their Facebook account has been hacked when it actually hasn’t.

Understandably, they change their password thinking that will fix the problem, but it doesn’t.

Messages continue being sent out in their name even after they change their password, which of course has them pulling their hair out trying to figure out why someone is still sending messages to their friends from their account.

Well, if your friends start receiving messages that appear to have been sent by you, don’t panic. Your account probably has not been hacked.

What’s happening is someone has created a fake account using your name and photo and they’re using that account to make it look like the messages they’re sending came from you.

This scam is very similar to the one I wrote about in this post, but the big difference is this scam takes place entirely on Facebook Messenger, not on the Facebook website.

Unfortunately, Facebook makes it easy for scammers to impersonate you on Messenger, and that can cause a ton of confusion when a scammer decides to target YOUR friends for mischief.

The good news is your Facebook account has NOT been hacked.

The bad news is your friends are receiving messages from a scammer that make them believe your account has been hacked, and when they message you to tell you about it YOU also believe your account has been hacked (even though it hasn’t).

Luckily, this is one of the easiest scams to detect. Here’s how…

When one of your friends messages you and says “you’ve been hacked because I’m receiving strange messages from you“, send them a message back and ask them if there are two accounts in your name showing up in their messages list.

If they see your name on the list twice that means they’re receiving messages in your name from two different accounts – your real account and the fake account that was created by the scammer.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really anything you can do to prevent this type of scam, or even put a stop to it because it’s very easy to impersonate another user on Messenger.

What you can do is warn your Messenger contacts about the fake “you” so they can be on the lookout for those strange messages and block the fake account one they discover it.

And now, one final recommendation: Even though your actual Facebook account hasn’t been hacked, I still recommend that you follow the steps in this post to enable Two-Factor Authentication on it to prevent it from being hacked in the future.

THE TEN(10) STEP TACTICAL JOB SEARCH

If you are looking for a job, you need a plan.  You can't send out your resume to 100 places and hope that one of them is a good fit for you.  Also, how do you figure out what companies are hiring someone with your experience?  In order to make it easier to find what you need, plan your attack.

Here are some steps that you should take - beyond making your resume

1.  Make a list of your top skills

2.  Make a list of how those skills intersect with your interests

3.  Eliminate the skills that are least interesting to you

4.  Now use the remaining skills as your keywords

5.  Now that you know what to look for.  Next decide where - local, another location or remote work

6.  Create or update your LinkedIn profile in order to reflect the keywords you picked above

7.  Use job search Web pages to search for companies hiring for jobs that meet your keywords

8.  Use LinkedIn to find people who work for companies hiring for your interests.  Specifically, look for people who could one day be your boss, or a team member.  Add those people to your LinkedIn followers and engage them

9.  Participate in job fairs and hiring events.  Research the companies that will be participating and target your time to the companies that meet your criteria

10.  Have a daily goal for how many companies you will apply to.  Try to stay under that daily goal and not overdo it

FINALLY, When you're unemployed, looking for a job is a gut wrenching humbling experience.  Every no can be a soul crushing experience.  Take time away from your job search in order to recharge your batteries and step away from the depressing realities.  Go for a walk, or head to the gym.  Exercise can boost your body and your mind.

VIRUS SOFTWARE - HOW SAFE IS TOO SAFE

Recently, I had occasion to assist someone with their computer.  It was running very slow and loading applications very slowly.  Normally, this is a symptom of older versions of Windows.  Specifically pre Windows 7.  However this was a Windows 10 machine, so it shouldn't have been a problem.

After reviewing his installed applications we discovered he had 3 installed virus applications.

You might think that having more than one will really make you safe.  However, what was happening is all 3 of these applications were running at the same time actively scanning the drive for problems.  Because of this the system was bogged down.

We removed 2 of them and the system started functioning a lot better.

While we were working on this problem, an email came in for a 4th virus software saying the registration was being renewed.  Luckily it wasn't installed.

My advice.  Stick to 1 scanner.  They all do pretty much the same thing.  Just in different ways.  Adding more virus scanners doesn't give you more protection.  Just more headaches.

FACEBOOK GETS SOMETHING RIGHT

FACEBOOK takes a lot of heat for their mistakes. So I think it's only fair when they do something right that we should mention that too. One of my hobbies is to take fashion & Avant Garde photographs of models. I usually shoot with a partner and when we're done, we share the fruits of our labor online.

A while back she found one of her images being used by a hair dresser in Bogota Columbia without any permission. He had posted it on his Facebook page with his own signature on the image, and did such a sloppy edit, you could still see my friend's watermark. He even posted a photo of the image blown up to poster size with him standing in front of the image.

Needless to say she was upset. It was pretty bold of him to post the image as his own work. Even the model from our photo shoot was upset. My friend and partner started by requesting directly from the person to remove the photo from his site. He didn't respond, so she took it to the next level. She lodged a formal intellectual property rights violation with Facebook and provided an original copy of the photo along with her original watermark.

The Facebook team investigated and within 1/2 hour the page was completely taken down. I know my partner. If he had asked and paid her a reasonable amount, he could have used the photo for commercial purposes. Thank you Facebook for faithfully protecting my partner's work and moving to resolve this issue with alacrity.

T-MOBILE WAS HACKED IN AUGUST 2021

T-mobile was hacked in August 2021 by a "professional" hacker.  It is not clear if the information he stole has been released to the dark web.  This effects over 40 Million people.  Information included full social security numbers and Drivers License numbers.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THIS EFFECTS BOTH CURRENT AND PREVIOUS T-MOBILE CUSTOMERS.

In one case that I personally know of, the person was a customer back in the 1990's but has since left that provider.  Her personal information was stolen.  The repercussions of this is that once you provide your information, it is never deleted.

What can you do if you suspect your information was compromised.

1.  Lock your credit -  Equifax, Experian and Transunion (one from each company) can be locked so that no new lines of credit can be opened in your name.  The downfall for this is if you need to open a new line of credit such as for a new car, etc, you will need to unfreeze your credit

2.  Use a credit monitoring service.  Some banks are now offering this as a service.

3.  Use an identity theft monitoring service.

4.  Make sure you are getting your yearly free credit reports.

I anticipate that there will be several class action law suits.

SMART HOME TECH - AN IDEA NOT QUITE READY

So I've tried several different smart home solutions. From plugs to lights.

My main beef with smart home tech is that they need to stay connected to your home wifi system. Any interruption causes the devices to go unresponsive. Lights won't turn on or change color. Power switches won't turn on or off. I've tried a few different devices and they all suffer the same frustrating problem. They all stop responding at some point and they need a reset.

By restart, I mean they need to be powered off or unplugged. In the case of lights, simply turn the light fixture off. For plugs, you need to unplug them, then plug them in and wait until they link to wifi. In my case, I have a floor lamp positioned just behind my tv. When it stops responding, I need to tip it around the TV and turn the power off and then turn it back on in a few seconds.

Note to manufacturers. Have the devices do a daily self-power reset. That might reduce the problem. Or, design a fault tolerance circuit that detects when a wifi signal has been lost for a period of time and recycles the device power.

Smart home tech is not new. The ability to remote control home systems has been around for years, but no one seems to have perfected it yet. I remember episodes in TV shows where people try to control their home and hilarity ensues. Window shutters open and close at random. Heat turns on and off at random. The TV turns on by itself and the volume is insane.

It's going to be a long time before I fully trust these systems. And if companies can't get these little things right, imagine them working on automating your car.

UPDATE:  I purchased a device in August that detects when a loss of internet connectivity is detected.  I've been testing the device since then and been happy with the results.  It's a plug that monitors the internet signal and when it loses a connection to the internet, it resets my modem and my router.  It also sends a text once a connection has been reestablished.

COMPUTERS AREN'T GETTING ANY FASTER

When it comes to processor speed, we haven't had a breakthrough in years. It all comes down to heat. For a number of years, processors got faster and faster. Companies got better at cramming more and more speed into their chips. However, I we've hit the proverbial speed barrier.

Where previously, system speeds were doubling every few years, we have not had a major improvement in several years. It's honestly not necessary to spend money on a new system when systems 4-5 years old are capable of doing the job just fine.

Companies need to evaluate their expenses and the actual cost benefit to buying new equipment every couple years. Where changes were constant and new speeds improved operations, today there really isn't a need to spend a lot of money on hardware.

Instead, companies should concentrate on software and personnel and consider operating system updates as they come out instead of a full system replacement.

On the personal user side, as long as your system can be kept up to date, for the operating system it should be fine.

APPLE WATCH - Review

IS THE APPLE WATCH WORTH THE HYPE? I have used the Apple 4 watch for few years now. I have tried most of its features and found some good uses and some irritations. I'll review the WI-FI Edition as that is the one that I have.

BATTERY LIFE. Just wearing the watch across the normal part of the day causes the battery to lose a lot of life. For example. just sleeping with it on will drain 30-40% of battery life overnight. You can disable various functions and prolong the life such as turning the motion sensors off, but if you're like me and trying to track my sleep, then it's a fast drain. Another tip is to turn off the Wi-Fi until you need it.

FITNESS. I like the way it tracks my swimming. The pool at my gym is approximately 13 yards long. When I set the watch to that length and test the distance of one lap from the watch, it keeps a good count. Also, swimming additional laps and keeping track of the lap count proves it's accurate over the entire workout. However, using the watch in my entire workout causes a faster drain on the battery. Walking and running are also pretty accurate.

TIP. If you press the crown, it activates Siri. This happens at random when you're just wearing the watch. I've learned to use the water lock feature unless I'm actively changing a function. The downfall here is you first need to unlock the watch before you can review other features. This isn't specific to just the Apple Watch. Other watches also activate at random and need to be locked as well.

HEALTH. The heart rate monitor works like many other watches available on the market. It takes your pulse. I bought another ($69.00) fit watch which I gave to my wife that boasts a blood pressure monitor. That's not present in the Apple Watch. The ECG feature is nice but comes with a disclaimer that it can't detect a atrial Fibrillation, so it's more of a gimmick than any real feature.

USED AS A WATCH. It tells time. That's about as close as I can get to a positive statement. Other less expensive watches boast a large number of watch face options. The Apple Watch has less than 10. Also, there is no way to upload and design other faces.

Overall, I use my Apple Watch every day, but the reality doesn't match the hype. It spends almost as much time on a charger as it does on my wrist. As for the cost, well, let's just say that Apple still owes me a steak diner, roses and a box of chocolates.

VIDEO: IS THE TEXT ON YOUR LAPTOP OR DESKTOP TOO SMALL

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET

Don't let companies up sell you on equipment.  Get just what you need.

Internet Service Provider (ISP)- A company that will connect you to the internet.  Spectrum, Verizon, etc
Modem - A device that communicates with the internet
Router - A device that connects multiple devices to the modem

Note:  Some modems also contain a built in router

MODEMS IN DEPTH

A device that sits between your home network and your internet provider. You can’t access the internet without one because your devices and your provider’s network use different types of signals to send and receive data.

ROUTERS IN DEPTH

Wired Router - Allows a direct connection to the router which reduces interruptions or loss of signal
Wireless router - Allows multiple devices to connect to the router
Mesh Router - Allows you to place a few routers in your home in order to extend the signal.  Used in homes with metal or interference, and or larger homes or offices.

Note:  Most routers are a combination of wired and wireless.  You can use either method to connect

ADVANCED CONCEPT  Most current home routers contain a switchboard that allow multiple devices to connect.

 CONCLUSION

A modem offers a single connection to the internet.  Think of it as the main pipe of water to your house.  The Router allows several  connections to the modem.  These are the other pipes that branch off.

JOB INTERVIEW SCAMS - WARNING SIGNS

Here are some of the scams I've seen and how to spot them.

1.  Package receiver - That you will receive packages at your home and then forward to other people.  Stay away from this one.  It could be drugs, stolen property or another scam.

2.  Scams that involve a company sending you a check.  It is most likely coming from a foreign country and when you get it, it's higher than it should be and they want you to wire money back to them.

3.  Companies that ask for DOB or a partial SSN before a single interview has even taken place.

4.  Emails from a company where the email address doesn't match the company name.

5.  There's a new scam where a supposed interviewer will ask about your bank as part of the interview.
